The best submarine from every era, explained: in 1958, USS Nautilus radioed home three words, "Nautilus, ninety north," after crossing under the North Pole. Getting there took more than three centuries of people nearly drowning in strange machines.
This animated history picks the submarine that led every era and explains why it won: Cornelis Drebbel's leather-wrapped rowing boat under the Thames in 1620; Robert Fulton's copper Nautilus with a hand-cranked propeller; Isaac Peral's battery-powered torpedo boat that Spain shelved; John Philip Holland's USS Holland, built by a man Irish rebels once paid to fight Britain; U-9, which sank three British cruisers in about an hour in 1914; the Type VII U-boat; the Gato class and USS Barb, the submarine that blew up a train; the Type XXI "Elektroboot"; the titanium Soviet Alfa; and the Virginia class, steered with an Xbox controller. Plus honorable mentions: H. L. Hunley, I-400, Ohio class, Gotland, Kilo, USS Triton, Los Angeles class and Seawolf.
The worst submarines got their own episode on Sketchy Warfare — watch both and tell us which list is harder to argue with.

How this video was made: the script was researched from naval museum archives, official navy histories and published books, cross-checked between sources, then written and narrated for this channel. Every scene is hand-drawn in our doodle style, and the real submarines are shown in archive photographs.
Sources: Naval History and Heritage Command; Submarine Force Library and Museum (USS Nautilus), Groton; Museo Naval de Cartagena (Peral); Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport; Deutsches U-Boot-Museum; Clay Blair, "Silent Victory" and "Hitler's U-Boat War"; William R.
