Bandeh is the Indian Ocean song that refuses to age. Written for Black Friday, performed at GIFLIF's world-first Drive-In Music Fest — nine and a half minutes of one of India's greatest live bands doing what they do best. Indian Ocean wrote it as a song of reckoning: Kisey kaafir kahega, kisey kaayar kahega — who will you call the unbeliever, who will you call the coward. The question lands differently every time it is sung, in every room it is sung in, because it has never stopped being the right question. Indian Ocean perform it here live at the GIFLIF Drive-In Music Fest — the world's first drive-in music festival, held in Bhopal. The band — Rahul Ram, Nikhil Rao, Amit Kilam, and Tuheen Chakravorty — plays it with the weight the song carries. No studio polish, no backing track. Just the band and the night. The song begins with the familiar cry: Arey ruk jaa rey bandeh — stop, O man. Slow down. The words are Sufi in spirit but entirely secular in effect. Mandir yeh chup hai, masjid yeh gumsum — the temple is silent, the mosque is quiet. When both fall silent, what is left? The song answers: only nature, only time, only the question itself. Indian Ocean have been making music since 1990. They are the band that proved Indian rock could be rooted — that you could play electric guitar and tabla together without either compromising. Bandeh is their most played song, but it is not their most comfortable one. It is the one that asks the hardest thing. GIFLIF — the Great Indian Film & Literature Festival — brings together cinema, literature, and live music in one space. The Drive-In Music Fest was its debut concert format, held outdoors during the pandemic, earning a world record for the first of its kind.
