Why STARE Is 2026's Most Important Indian Fashion Film | Bhavya Ramesh × NorBlack NorWhite
👁️ The gaze is unwanted. The collection? Very much not.
STARE — the debut collaboration between Bhavya Ramesh Jewelry × NorBlack NorWhite — is already 2026's most talked-about Indian fashion film. Directed by Bijoy Shetty (Browncrew Productions) and shot on location in Kerala, this 2-minute 16-second brand film doesn't sell jewelry. It builds a world. A world where the nazar battu — India's ancient protective symbol against the evil eye — is reimagined as modern armor for the female gaze.
The premise is visceral: what if the protection symbols our grandmothers hung on doorways — eyes, snakes, chillies, lemons, fangs, moons, ghungroos — became wearable? What if the unwanted gaze could be met, stared down, and transformed into power? That's what STARE does.
Premiered June 17, 2026, on the BHAVYA RAMESH JEWELRY YouTube channel and amplified by ELLE India, the campaign brings together two of India's most distinctive women-led creative brands. One approaches fashion through colour, culture, and storytelling. The other has built a cult following for jewelry that is bold, expressive, and rooted in symbolism. Together, they've created something neither could have made alone.

🔍 Why STARE Is a Masterclass in Brand Filmmaking:
→ The nazar battu as creative spine: Every culture has an evil eye protection symbol. STARE grounds itself in India's version — the nazar battu — and builds an entire visual vocabulary around it. The film opens with an eye. The collection features eyes. The campaign is called STARE. The narrative is airtight.
→ Casting the unwanted gaze as the antagonist: Most jewelry campaigns show a woman being admired. STARE shows a woman refusing to be looked at without consent. The shift from "object of the gaze" to "owner of the gaze" is quiet but radical.
→ Three strong creative forces, one cohesive vision: Bhavya Ramesh, Mriga Kapadiya, and filmmaker Bijoy Shetty — each with a powerful individual signature — spent months "jamming on ideas, working through so many possibilities" before finding the confluence. As Kapadiya told ELLE India: "We are three strong forces and finding a confluence that felt right to us all has brought out the strength for this world we created."
→ Kerala as character, not backdrop: The decision to shoot in Kerala wasn't logistical — it was atmospheric. The location's lush, raw texture mirrors the collection's tension between the natural and the mystical. As Ramesh told ELLE: "Being there, and realising that there were people who genuinely connected with what we do, was a beautiful feeling."
→ Symbols that do double duty: Every motif in the collection — chillies, lemons, snakes, ghungroos — is both a traditional Indian protection symbol AND a contemporary design object. Nothing is purely decorative. Everything means something.
