The traditional story says Christianity split in two in 1054 when representatives of Rome placed a bull of excommunication on the altar of Hagia Sophia. But the Great Schism of 1054 was not a clean or immediate division between the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches. The pope who authorized the mission was already dead, the condemnations targeted particular individuals, and relations between Rome and Constantinople continued long afterward. So when did the East–West Schism truly become irreversible? This history documentary follows the financial and political forces behind the Great Schism—from Byzantine confiscations of papal property and the rise of the Frankish alliance to Venice’s expanding commercial privileges inside the Byzantine Empire. It then examines the transport contract that changed the Fourth Crusade: 85,000 silver marks for a fleet built to carry 33,500 men. When far fewer crusaders assembled, the army could not pay its debt to Venice. That debt helped redirect the Fourth Crusade toward the Christian city of Zara and eventually toward Constantinople. In 1204, crusaders captured and looted the Byzantine capital, established a Latin Empire and carried treasures—including the famous bronze horses of the Hippodrome—back to Venice. Christianity may not have simply split in two in 1054.
