It was created in Bulgaria in 1955 by chefs from Balkantourist to promote local food and attract tourists. The ingredients were chosen to represent the colors of the Bulgarian flag: white, green, and red. In this video, I show you how I make Shopska salad and share my tips for choosing the best vegetables, using the right pepper and cucumber, seasoning the salad, and serving it the Bulgarian way. I use sunflower oil instead of olive oil and Bulgarian sirene instead of feta. And don't forget the bread! Dipping it into the delicious juices at the bottom of the bowl is one of the best parts. This salad is perfect as an appetizer with rakia or as a side dish. I also love eating it for lunch with plenty of bread for dipping, especially on a hot summer day.
