The first night after I buried my husband, I stood in the kitchen with his keys in my hand and realized I did not know which doors he had been locking. So I called my mother, a widow living alone in Guadalajara in a house with a gate onto the street, where nobody had ever gotten in. Here are the fifteen things she taught me, almost none of them cost money, and one of them I hope you never need.
THE FIFTEEN
1️⃣ Lock the back door, even in the daytime. The commonest way in is an unlocked door.
2️⃣ Three-inch screws in the door frame and hinges. The lock rarely breaks; the frame does.
3️⃣ The porch light that wakes up: a motion light beats a light left on all night.
4️⃣ Cut the bushes below the windows, and plant something thorny there instead.
5️⃣ The radio and the lamp on a timer, so the house looks lived in.
6️⃣ A padlock on the side gate: slow and noisy beats impossible.
7️⃣ The big dog bowl by the door (honest: a bowl does not bark; a real dog does).
8️⃣ The vecina who knows your schedule and takes in your packages.
9️⃣ Never open the door at night to anyone you were not expecting. Verify by calling the company's own number.
🔟 "We," never "I." Nobody needs to know you live alone.
1️⃣1️⃣ The broom handle in the sliding door track (the upside-down broom is folklore; this one works).
1️⃣2️⃣ Car keys on the nightstand: the panic button wakes the whole street.
1️⃣3️⃣ Never hide a key outside. A spare goes to a person.
1️⃣4️⃣ The phone charged and a light within reach of the bed.
1️⃣5️⃣ Trust the feeling. If someone is inside: get out or lock yourself in a room, call 911, never confront.
The honest word: no house is impossible to break into. The goal is to be slower, louder, brighter and more watched than the house down the street. Spend on the door frame before the subscription.
Who profits: the alarm company every month, the camera subscription to save the video, the smart lock with its app and plan, and a refill of fear in every advertisement. Nobody makes a dollar from a woman with long screws in her door frame, a broom handle in her sliding door, and a neighbor across the street.
Tonight, do one: lock the back door and put your car keys on your nightstand. This weekend, the three-inch screws.
What did YOUR mother do to keep the house safe at night? Tell me, and your county. I read every one.
