Self drive safari Kgalagadi Transfrontier South Africa

Our trip to Namibia was easily one of our favorite travel adventures, but the grand finale turned out to be something we never expected. Before making the long drive back to Windhoek, we decided to squeeze in one last safari at the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. To get there, we crossed the border from Namibia into South Africa without legally entering either country. A unique loophole that lets you explore the this National Park as long as you enter and leave through the Mata Mata gate. Staying at the fenced Mata Mata camp for three nights gave us a comfortable home base, but our first game drives left us a bit disappointed. Coming straight from seeing so many animals in Etosha, the Kgalagadi felt harsh, empty, and challenging. But the desert changed your perspective. Once we stopped rushing and started paying attention to the smaller details, the Kgalagadi rewarded us with some of our absolute best travel memories. From spotting a rare brown hyena and our first cheetah to a hilarious encounter with a spotted hyena. The Kgalagadi wilderness completely stole our hearts.
