Why is Playa Grande protected? It is the main beach of Las Baulas National Marine Park, one of the most important nesting beaches for leatherback sea turtles. Access is limited at night during nesting season to protect them. Is Playa Grande good for surfing? Yes. It is a consistent beach break that works through the day and is usually less crowded than Tamarindo right across the water. Can you swim at Playa Grande? The waves and currents can be strong, so it is better known as a surf beach than a calm swimming one. Take care and watch the water before going in. How do you get to Playa Grande from Tamarindo? It is a short boat taxi across the Tamarindo estuary, or about a 20 minute drive around by road. The estuary has crocodiles, so take the boat rather than wading across.
