Behind the Success of Payne Haas: Family, Samoa & Money Lessons | AJ EP18

Premiership-winning NRL forward Payne Haas joins Athlete’s Journey: Winning On & Off The Field to share the story behind his rise from a late-blooming junior in Maitland to success at NRL, State of Origin and international level. Payne reflects on the work ethic instilled in him by his family, the influence of watching his uncle play professionally and the journey from the Broncos’ 2020 wooden spoon to winning the 2025 NRL Premiership. He also opens up about leaving Brisbane and beginning a new chapter with South Sydney under Wayne Bennett. The conversation explores Payne’s decision to represent Samoa after previously playing for Australia, the importance of honouring his family and heritage, and the unforgettable experience of performing the Samoan war cry alongside the supporters. Payne shares the financial lessons he has learned throughout his career—from celebrating his first NRL paycheque with his mates to losing money through a crypto investment after trusting the wrong person. He explains why young athletes must ask questions, surround themselves with trustworthy people and remember that NRL income will not last forever. Payne also discusses fatherhood, the experiences that helped him mature and his plans to study psychology as he begins preparing for life beyond professional sport. From premiership success and representing Samoa to financial mistakes and future planning, this episode offers an honest look at the experiences shaping Payne Haas on and off the field.
