The Dark Past Behind Germany’s Richest Families [NO AI]

Some of Germany’s most powerful family fortunes have histories that reach back into one of the darkest periods of the twentieth century. Behind familiar names such as Dr. Oetker and the Quandt family behind BMW lies a complicated history involving Nazi-era industry, forced labor, Aryanization, political connections, and fortunes that survived the collapse of the Third Reich. This documentary looks at the stories of the Bahlsen, Oetker, von Finck and Quandt families — how their businesses operated during Nazi Germany, what happened to their wealth after the war, and how later generations have confronted, investigated or sometimes struggled with that history. This is not about holding descendants responsible for crimes committed before they were born. It is about a different question: What responsibility comes with inheriting a fortune — and the history that comes with it?
