Bourdain was brokenhearted and at a crossroads in his life when he first went up the Skrang River into the jungles of Borneo — and the Iban people who hosted him in their longhouse, fed him, and treated him with extraordinary kindness during one of the darkest periods of his life invited him back for their annual Gawai rice harvest festival. It took him ten years, but he kept the promise — going back to see if all the bad stuff running through his head the first time was still lurking, retracing his steps to see if it still hurt, armed with beer for gifting and a willingness to do whatever the Iban asked of him. What followed was nonstop tuak and langkau, Iban karaoke described as completely insane, the honor of killing a pig for the community feast, and a traditional hand-tapped jungle tattoo hammered into his sternum with bamboo and sharp needles that he immediately acknowledged was probably ill-advised.
