In 2025, a baby was born in a hospital in Philadelphia. His name was KJ. He wasn't even a week old when the doctors found the problem: inside one gene, in his DNA, a single letter had been printed wrong.
Six months later, for the first time in history, humans went inside a living child's body and rewrote his genetic code, letter by letter.
How did that become possible? The answer is CRISPR, the pair of scissors that handed human beings the power to play god.
What is Why-Fi?
Why-Fi is KhabarGaon's Hindi science show. We pick up one question and follow it wherever it goes: into labs, into old papers, into the lives of the people who asked it first. Every episode has a "why" buried inside it, because science doesn't begin with answers. It begins with someone refusing to accept that this is just how things are.
The question this episode is chasing: if DNA is the source code of life, how did we learn to edit it, and where does this stop?
You'll meet the people who built the road. Yoshizumi Ishino, who in 1987 noticed a strange repeating pattern in a bacteria's DNA and honestly wrote down that he had no idea what it was. Francisco Mojica, who spent a decade almost alone with that puzzle in the salt lagoons of Spain, and gave it the name CRISPR. Rodolphe Barrangou and Philippe Horvath, whose proof came out of a yogurt factory in France. Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier, whose meeting in Puerto Rico turned a bacterial immune system into a programmable tool, and who won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for it. And He Jiankui, the scientist who walked across the line everyone else had agreed to draw.
Along the way we clear up the basics: the difference between DNA, a gene and a genome, how Cas9 actually finds the right spot and cuts, what separates somatic editing from germline editing (and why that difference decides everything), why the sickle cell cure Casgevy costs around 18 crore rupees per patient, and the question left standing at the end. What kind of gods do we choose to become?
