The Real Thing: Tom Stoppard & Sanjna Kapoor Tom Stoppard’s first full-length play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, was staged by the National Theatre in 1967. This was followed by other award-winning works, including Jumpers, Every Good Boy Deserves Favour (with Andre Previn), Travesties, Night and Day, The Real Thing, Hapgood, Arcadia, Indian Ink, The Invention of Love, The Coast of Utopia (a trilogy), Rock’n’Roll and The Hard Problem. His stage adaptations and translations include Undiscovered Country, On the Razzle, Rough Crossing, The Seagull, Henry IV, Heroes, Ivanov and The Cherry Orchard. Stoppard has also written for radio, television and film. His screen credits, as writer and co-writer, include Brazil, Empire of the Sun, Enigmaand Shakespeare in Love, winner of an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. He also directed his own screenplay of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Stoppard received a knighthood in 1997 and in 2000 was awarded the Order of Merit by Her Majesty the Queen. Sanjna Kapoor is co-founder of Junoon, a social enterprise that aims to create platforms for theatre in India. She is responsible for having brought to Indian audiences some of the finest of world and Indian theatre, being the first to introduce a touring theatre festival into the Indian scene. She currently spearheads Junoon’s school programme and continues the legacy of both the Kapoors and the Kendals to take theatre to people across the country. Her current focus is working towards an all-India theatre alliance, based on a practical sharing of resources and ideas as well as consolidating and strengthening theatre practice in India. She is a core team member and facilitator of SMART (Strategic Management in the Art of Theatre) India. The Real Thing Tom Stoppard , one of the greatest living playwrights, is the author of seminal works such as Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead , Travesties, Every Good Boy Deserves a Favor , Arcadia, Jum pers, The Real Thing and The Invention of Love. He is also the Oscar­ winning screenwriter of Shakespeare in Love and The Russia House . Born in Czechoslovakia, Stoppard fled the imminent Nazi occupation as a child refugee. He settled with his family in Britain after the war in 1946, having spent the prior three years in a boarding school in Darjeeling. Themes of human rights, censorship and political freedom pervade his work along with exploration of linguistics and philosophy. Stoppard has been a key playwright of the National Theatre and is one of the most internationally performed dramatists of his generation. He discusses his life and work with Sanjna Kapoor. Festival Co Directors Namita Gokhale and William Dalrymple, alongside Producer Sanjoy K Roy and Teamwork Arts, create a platform for an array of speakers to debate, discuss and present their ideas in the annual five-day programme set against the backdrop of Rajasthan's stunning cultural heritage and the Diggi Palace in the state capital Jaipur. Past speakers have ranged from Nobel Laureates His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, J.M. Coetzee, Muhammad Yunus and Orhan Pamuk, Man Booker Prize winners Ben Okri, Howard Jacobson, Margaret Atwood, Marlon James, Michael Ondaatje, Paul Beatty and Yan Martel, Pulitzer Prize winners Andrew Sean Greer, Benjamin Moser, Colson Whitehead and Jhumpa Lahiri, Sahitya Akademi winners Gulzar, Javed Akhtar, M.T. Vasudevan Nair as well as the late Girish Karnad, Mahasweta Devi and U.R. Ananthamurthy. An annual event that goes beyond literature, the Festival has also hosted Amartya Sen, Amitabh Bachchan, the late A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Oprah Winfrey, Stephen Fry, Thomas Piketty and former president of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai.
