William Henry Sleeman in Narsinghpur
In 1822, Lieutenant William Henry Sleeman was officially appointed as the magistrate and administrator of the Narsinghpur district within the Saugor and Nerbudda territories. This period demanded intense civil and judicial administrative work, which Sleeman later noted as some of the most exhausting labor of his entire career.
However, his routine duties soon shifted toward a far more sinister reality. While managing the district, Sleeman began noticing alarming reports regarding the sudden, unexplained disappearances of merchants, sepoys, and ordinary travellers along the transit routes of Central India. Families were left without answers, and individuals vanished without a trace between major towns.
This critical observation in Narsinghpur served as the catalyst for his groundbreaking investigations. By connecting these seemingly isolated disappearances, Sleeman eventually uncovered the vast, highly organized network of the Thuggee cult. His early administrative vigilance in Narsinghpur laid the direct foundation for his later campaigns that systematically dismantled the centuries-old secret society.
