A Perfect Foaling… Until It Wasn’t | Hardy’s First Hours & Dummy Foal Warning Signs

This was a daytime foaling that, at first, looked completely textbook. Hardy came into the world strong—he stood, nursed, and passed his meconium right on schedule. Everything checked out exactly how you’d hope in those critical first hours. But around the 3-hour mark, things changed. Hardy began to seizure, and it quickly became clear that something wasn’t right. This video is being shared to help others recognize that not all issues are immediately obvious at birth. Some foals may appear completely normal in the beginning, only to develop signs later—commonly referred to as “dummy foal” or neonatal maladjustment syndrome. Early signs to watch for include: Shivering more than what would be considered normal Abnormal sleep/wake cycles (deep, prolonged sleep and difficulty waking) Neurological changes such as weakness, unsteadiness (ataxia), or seizures Odd vocalizations, including barking-like sounds Facial spasms like lip curling, teeth grinding, or excessive chewing/licking/salivation Increasing lethargy or a foal becoming dull, slow, or unresponsive Recognizing these signs early and acting quickly can make a critical difference in outcomes. Our goal in sharing Hardy’s story is to help educate and raise awareness, so others feel more prepared if they ever face a similar situation.
