Welcome back, Garden Lovers! What makes a drought-tolerant garden feel peaceful, lush, and beautifully designed? 🌿 Join me for Part 2 of my tour of Kyle Connall and Iva Marie’s extraordinary garden in West Linn, Oregon, where lavender, eucalyptus, unusual shrubs, sculptural succulents, and thoughtful plant combinations create a landscape full of character.
In Part 2 of this Over the Fence Landscape Tour, we explore the front and side gardens, stroll through the famous eucalyptus-lined driveway, discover a sea of lavender, and get an exciting look at Kyle’s newest garden project: a series of sculptural beds planted with yuccas, agaves, and other drought-tolerant treasures.
Kyle’s gardening journey began with a surprising discovery: the previous owners’ lawn cost more than $1,000 a month to water. That experience sent him searching for a different approach and led him to a lifelong passion for dry gardening and unusual plants.
Along the way, we talk about:
🌿 Using repetition to create calm, cohesive garden design
💜 'Against the grain' lavender upkeep
🌳 Eucalyptus trees, winter damage, and the lessons of gardening with borderline-hardy plants
🌵 Designing sculptural beds with yuccas, agaves, and prickly pears
🪨 Using gravel pathways and excellent drainage in a water-wise landscape
🌺 Tropical-looking plants in a very Zen courtyard
🐝 Pollinator-friendly plants and seasonal garden interest
🌱 Creating a garden that looks beautiful throughout the year
🏡 Developing a new garden from an idea into a living landscape
Kyle also shares the thinking behind his newest garden beds, inspired by sculptural yuccas, bold shapes, and the dry-garden designs that have influenced him.
Located in West Linn, Oregon, in the transition between USDA Zones 8a and 8b, this garden offers plenty of inspiration for Pacific Northwest gardeners interested in drought-tolerant landscaping, unusual plants, and naturalistic garden design.
