Simpler MIDI works like a sampler, but it plays MIDI instead of audio. Load a clip or a .mid file (or record one straight into it), play a key, and the whole sequence plays back, transposed to that key. Chord progressions, arps, drum patterns and melodies all become playable instruments. Slice mode can also chop a sequence up and put each piece on its own key.
How it works
Load in one step: drop a .mid file onto the device, or click any MIDI clip in your Set and press Load.
Record straight into it: press Rec and play. You hear yourself as you play, and the take loads as a new sequence when you're done. Recording can be free length or 1–16 bars, with optional Quantize. Add the free Simpler MIDI Listener to record from another track.
Play it from the keyboard: the Root key plays the sequence at its original pitch, and every other key transposes it. Scale Aware keeps everything in your Live 12 scale.
Shape the playback: set Start, Length and a loop right on the note display, with Simpler-style zoom and fine dragging.
Four Sustain Modes: Forward, Reverse, Loop Forward and Loop Bidirectional. Loops stay musical even while you drag or automate them.
Legato modes: Off, Retrigger, Hold and Trill. Hold and Trill change the sequence's pitch without restarting it, which is great for basslines and trills.
Up to 8 voices: play chords of sequences, with Gate or Trigger playback.
Speed control: sync to your Set's tempo, or run at 10–400 % of it. You can also stretch or squash the clip with ":2" and "*2".
Slice mode
Chop any sequence into slices: each slice gets its own key, starting at C1. You can slice by Transient (note onsets), Beat, Region or Manual.
Edit slices on the display: drag them to move them, or double-click to add your own. Each Slice By mode remembers its own edits.
Slice or Thru playback: Slice plays just that slice. Thru plays from the slice on to the end, and the slices light up as they play.
Modulation built in
An LFO (up to 20 Hz, or synced) and an ADSR envelope with tension curves.
Eight destinations for each: Pitch, Mod wheel, Expression, Pan, Tempo, Start, Loop Position and Transpose.
Start scrub: modulate Start and the playhead sweeps back and forth through your clip. Each note plays exactly while the playhead is over it, which makes great glitchy, granular-style MIDI effects.
Made for performance
Everything is a Live parameter you can automate and MIDI-map, including Rec.
The sequences and settings are saved with your Set, and duplicating the device keeps everything.
The ◀ ▶ arrows step through up to 20 loaded sequences. Info View text covers every control, and Stop doubles as a panic button.
Requirements: Ableton Live 12 Suite, or Standard with Max for Live, running Max 9.
