In the winter of 1814, the River Thames froze so completely that Londoners walked across it — and built a fair on the ice.
Tonight's sleep story drifts through the age of the frost fairs: the old London Bridge whose narrow arches helped the river freeze, the great fair of 1683–84, the printers who set up their presses on the Thames and sold keepsakes printed with a visitor's name and the date, and the last frost fair of February 1814 — when a book about frost, Frostiana, was printed and published on the ice itself.
Settle in. There is no hurry. The river is resting, and so can you.

HOW THIS STORY WAS MADE
Every historical claim in this episode was checked against published sources before recording (see Sources below). Passages that invite you to imagine a scene are atmospheric interpretation, clearly framed as imagination in the narration — never presented as recorded testimony. No quotations were invented.
The period scenes in this video are painterly illustrative reconstructions created for this episode and are labeled "Illustrative Reconstruction" on screen. They are artwork, not archival photographs or prints.
