During the first days of July 1940, Luftwaffe units newly established along the French and Belgian coasts began increasing their operations against British shipping in the English Channel. These attacks served several purposes. Destroying coastal shipping would interfere with Britain's internal supply system, but the convoys offered another opportunity as well: they could force RAF Fighter Command to come out and fight. The Luftwaffe possessed the initiative. Fighter Command had to disperse its strength across Britain, while German commanders could choose when and where to concentrate their aircraft. During the Channel campaign, the principal German formations committed to gaining air superiority were General der Flieger Bruno Loerzer's II Fliegerkorps in the Pas-de-Calais and General der Flieger Wolfram von Richthofen's VIII Fliegerkorps farther west in Normandy. KG 2, equipped with Dornier Do 17 bombers, was among the principal bomber formations operating from the Pas-de-Calais. On 10 July, German reconnaissance located the British convoy BREAD passing through the Dover Straits. A substantial striking force was assembled. Shortly after 13:30, British radar detected a major concentration forming behind Cap Gris-Nez. The German force approaching Dover included approximately twenty-four Dornier bombers in V formations, around twenty Bf 110 Zerstörer close escorts, and approximately twenty Bf 109s providing high cover. The Bf 110s belonged to the "Horst Wessel" ZG 26, commanded by Oberstleutnant Joachim-Friedrich Huth. Fighter Command reacted quickly. Hurricanes of No. 32 Squadron were among the first to encounter the German formation. Spitfires of No. 74 Squadron followed, and Hurricanes of No. 111 Squadron subsequently entered the battle. As the formations approached Dover, British anti-aircraft guns joined the engagement. For the Luftwaffe crews crossing the Channel, however, none of this was yet known. Their orders were simple. Find the convoy. Destroy its shipping. Bring the bombers home. The air campaign against Britain was beginning in earnest Next Mission: Wings of Glory WWII - Mission 2,3 Also Live Streaming on Twitch: www.twitch.tv/tabletopflights If you have not already subscribed to the channel, please do so that you will be alerted for new videos.
