Hampstead is one of London's oldest settlements, recorded in the Doomsday book of 1086 under the name "Hamestede", which translates to "Homestead Place", as it was a rural settlement outside of medieval London. In the 17th-18th centuries, it became a spa town, with Londoners travelling there for its supposedly healing spring waters. It was later developed in the Georgian and Victorian eras into one of the great urban villages of London, and has been the residence of many famous writers, poets and artists, including writers such as John Keats, George Orwell, Agatha Christie, T. S. Eliot, Sigmund Freud, John Constable, and current celebrities like Helena Bonham Carter, Ricky Gervais and Harry Styles. Today, it is one of the most desirable places to live in London and has the highest density of millionaires of any place in the country.
