What Really Happened at the Red Sea Was Not What You Were Taught | Bible for Sleep
This is a two hour reading and reflection on the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth chapters of the Book of Exodus, read in full, from the King James Version. All scripture is read from the King James Version, which is in the public domain.
Most retellings of the crossing of the Red sea compress it into a single instant: a staff is raised, and the water parts. The text itself records more than that image holds. It records a wind that blew for an entire night. It records a pillar of cloud and fire that physically changed position, moving from the front of the camp to the back, becoming a wall of darkness to one army and a wall of light to the other. It records chariot wheels coming off. It records two separate songs, sung by two different voices, on the same day. This recording reads those three chapters slowly and in full, alongside a small number of later passages that quote or remember the same event, and lets the text speak for itself rather than for any modern retelling of it.
This recording does not take a position on contested historical or scientific questions surrounding this event. Where the text states a cause, that cause is read exactly as it is written. Where the text is silent, or where a genuine translation question is open among scholars, this recording names that and leaves it there rather than choosing an answer for the listener.
This video is intended for relaxation and sleep. It is narrated by an AI voice reading public domain scripture, and is an independent educational project. It is not affiliated with, and does not speak for, any church, denomination or ministry, and it does not adjudicate between different Christian traditions' readings of contested passages. Nothing in this recording is medical advice, a treatment for insomnia, anxiety, grief or any other condition, or a substitute for medical care.
Passages read in this video, in full or in part, every one with book, chapter and verse, in the order they are read:
Exodus 13 (complete)
Genesis 50:1-26, read as a cross reference inside the Exodus 13 section
Exodus 14 (complete)
Psalm 106:6-12, read as a cross reference near the end of the Exodus 14 section
Exodus 15 (complete)
Psalm 136:1-16, read as a cross reference inside the Exodus 15 section
1 Corinthians 10:1-11, read as a cross reference inside the Exodus 15 section
Hebrews 11:22-29, read as a cross reference inside the Exodus 15 section
This is a commentary style reading. No passage is looped or repeated; each one listed above is read once, in the order given.
One open question is named in this video and deliberately left open: the Hebrew name behind the English phrase "Red sea," which translators and scholars have discussed for a very long time. This recording does not offer a preferred resolution to that question, and does not claim any specific historical or geographical explanation for the events described in these chapters.
