Episode 306 - The Deacon's Corner

Episode 306 - The Deacon's Corner Which one are you? Martha or Mary? This week Jesus has us look closely at our intentions: are they to serve the Lord out of love for Him, or do we let the task at hand get the better of us? Jesus tells us that there is a hierarchy when it comes to hearing the Word and doing it. Pope Benedict XVI makes this connection explicitly: "Prayer and service are not opposed, but service must be “imbued” with contemplation. Otherwise we risk “pure activism”—doing many things while losing the light of God’s word that teaches us how to love and serve well."  In our daily lives, we must keep the relationship with the Lord first; then, from that relationship, we share that love, in love, with our neighbor. It is too easy to get caught up in the "doing" and forget the motivation that began the service to our neighbor, letting the task at hand become the obstacle to our joy of fulfilling our service out of Love for the Lord.  The movement is from receiving God’s love to sharing it with the neighbor: not because love of neighbor is secondary or separate, but because communion with Christ forms and sustains it. If you answered both Martha and Mary, you were not wrong. We all have those days. But keeping Christ at the center of prayer and action ensures we serve Him with great love through our neighbors.
