SHOSTAKOVICH Two Pieces for String Octet, Op. 11

Flinders Quartet and Pirulí String Quartet perform Two Pieces for String Octet, Op. 11 by Dmitri Shostakovich. Recorded at Tempo Rubato, Brunswick, 8 August 2022. Composed in 1925 when Shostakovich was still a student at the Petrograd Conservatory, the Two Pieces show a composer already in full command of his voice. The Prelude unfolds with brooding intensity while the Scherzo crackles with the wit and rhythmic energy that would become his hallmark. Written for double string quartet, the work demands tight ensemble coordination across eight players - a challenge met here in a joyful collaboration between two quartets.
