Growing up within the monastery, they become devoted disciples and learn martial arts as well as Buddhist teachings. Among the monks, one disciple is consumed by ambition. He believes that power and authority should belong to him and treats the other monks with arrogance. He even forces the younger disciples to listen to teachings, practice martial arts, and meditate under his strict control. The other disciple holds a very different belief. He believes that true Buddhism comes from compassion and the heart, rather than rigid rules and outward appearances. His views challenge the ambitious monk, who considers his ideas improper and threatens his position within the temple. As the abbot grows older, he begins considering who should inherit his position. The monks are brought together for a contest to determine the next leader. During the martial arts test, the humble disciple deliberately holds back instead of taking advantage of his opponent. He also expresses his understanding of Buddhist philosophy through a verse. Recognizing his sincerity and wisdom, the abbot realizes that this disciple has the qualities needed to carry forward a new interpretation of Buddhist teaching. However, he also understands that such ideas will not be accepted easily within the existing temple hierarchy. Instead of simply giving him the position, the abbot entrusts him with a precious ceremonial robe and instructs him to travel south, where he can spread his understanding of Buddhism. Shortly afterward, the elderly abbot passes away. The decision leaves the ambitious monk furious. Having wanted the leadership position for himself, he cannot accept that the robe has been given to someone else. Determined to recover it, he sends pursuers after the departing disciple and even joins forces with local authorities to stop him. The journey soon becomes a dangerous struggle for survival. One pursuer initially attacks the disciple, but the humble traveler refuses to fight with hatred. Through his words and Buddhist teachings, he changes the man's mind, and the pursuer eventually abandons the chase to seek his own path of spiritual practice. A final confrontation becomes unavoidable. The traveler uses his martial arts skills to defend himself and protect the temple, but even after defeating his opponent, he refuses to take his life.
