Hebden Bridge Back Roads | A Surprisingly Steep Motorcycle Ride

Join us for another Vet and Beanie back-road adventure, this time starting and finishing in the popular West Yorkshire town of Hebden Bridge. Nestled at the bottom of the steep-sided Calder Valley, Hebden Bridge is a fascinating town with independent shops, cafés and a rich history. It has also featured in music videos and was the setting for the BBC crime drama *Happy Valley*. But we're here to explore the countryside surrounding the town, and this 25-mile circular route takes us onto some wonderfully scenic—and occasionally rather challenging—back roads. Leaving Hebden Bridge, we climb steeply out of the Calder Valley through Blackshaw Head and across Bridestones Moor before crossing into Lancashire and continuing through Mereclough and Worsthorne to Briercliffe. From there, we turn east onto some beautiful single-track roads towards Widdop Reservoir before continuing high above Hardcastle Crags and Gibson Mill. Eventually we drop back down into the Calder Valley and return to Hebden Bridge, but there's one more climb to come. Our final road out of town takes us up Height Road to one of the most spectacular viewpoints of the whole ride, with an amazing panorama across the Calder Valley. From here we could see Halifax to the east and Todmorden to the west—the town where we lived for many years. Some of the roads in and out of Hebden Bridge are extremely steep, with tight bends and switchbacks. One cobbled climb was particularly challenging on our V-Stroms, but the view waiting at the top made it worthwhile. It's a great reminder that you don't always have to travel hundreds of miles to find an amazing motorcycle ride.
