Obon is coming, so I started wondering something simple: who actually pays for our family grave? My mother doesn't seem to pay anything each year, and yet the grave is still there.
In this episode: why you can never own the land under a Japanese grave, what 永代使用権 and 永代使用料 mean, what a grave really costs, and why 176,000 families closed a grave last year — twice as many as ten years ago.
You'll pick up natural, easy Japanese for talking about Obon and family, learn how a Japanese grave visit actually works, and see why this change isn't people giving up on their ancestors.
