Part 1 of creating my new track Diversion as Nurve, from start to finish. Starting with a raw loop of around 17 sounds, I muted everything and began building the track back up, focusing on the drums first. I started with the layered kick, balancing the individual layers before treating them as one and getting the overall peak level sitting around -10 dBFS. From there, I worked on the layered snares, using EQ and processing to help everything sit together cohesively before balancing them in the mix. Once the kick and snares were in place, I brought in two different closed hi-hats and a ride cymbal, working on their levels, tones and relationships until the whole drum section started to come together. I also used a favourite FabFilter Saturn 2 saturation preset on the kick and snare to add some extra character and bring them to life. The drums are sounding good, but after listening back, I can already hear a few things I might want to revisit. The kick could be sitting a little too loud, or the snare might need to come up slightly. I’ll come back to that once I start introducing the bass in the next session. That’s part of the process: getting things into a good place, listening, making decisions and being prepared to revisit them as the track develops. A new track, a fresh start, and another journey from the ground up.
