Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay told the Tamil Nadu Assembly that three incriminating files from departments under the previous DMK government were sitting on his table after a review. He said the files contained proof related to the previous regime and warned the opposition not to force him to reveal them, stating he would do so at an appropriate time. Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson had earlier referred to the same review. The files have not been opened or acted upon publicly so far. Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin later initiated a debate and directly challenged the Chief Minister. He asked why Vijay was afraid to reveal the files and why he was delaying. In a sharp sarcastic jab, he asked whether the Chief Minister was waiting for an auspicious time or needed a josiyakaran (astrologer) to tell him when to open the files. Udhayanidhi also told the government to stop using punch dialogues and cinematic language, saying the Assembly is not a film set. A related personal remark he made was later expunged by the Speaker. Ministers from the ruling side replied that the government has full evidence and will take legal action at the right time according to law. During the same heated session, Minister CTR Nirmal Kumar hit back without naming former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. He said Tamil Nadu had already seen the story of people wearing a yellow towel or shawl after consulting astrologers. This was widely understood as a reference to Karunanidhi’s famous yellow shawl. Opponents have long claimed the colour change was based on astrological advice, while Karunanidhi himself had explained it as medical advice for a warm woolen shawl after health issues, which later became a personal trademark, with additional versions linking it to family preference or other gestures. DMK members strongly objected and countered with Karunanidhi’s own statements. Personal barbs were also exchanged between Udhayanidhi and Nirmal Kumar, including references to “Sanghi Minister” and a “bathroom” episode; some remarks were expunged and Udhayanidhi later apologised for one of them. In parallel, HR&CE Minister S. Ramesh clashed sharply with former DMK minister P.K. Sekar Babu over temple-related issues. Ramesh accused the previous government of leaving hundreds of crores worth of temple renovation works pending and incomplete, claimed the current government had recovered land and boosted revenue (including a figure of around ₹108 crore in a short period), and warned that anyone leaking information from the department to Sekar Babu would be identified and action taken. Sekar Babu hit back aggressively, questioning temple fund usage, claiming advance knowledge of announcements, and saying the DMK would not be intimidated by scare tactics or “boochanndi.” The exchanges were heated both inside the Assembly and in media interactions. Overall, the Assembly sessions saw intense TVK–DMK confrontation centred on the still-unopened files, sharp personal and political jabs, and the ongoing war of words over temple administration. The three files remain undisclosed, which continues to fuel the opposition’s charge that the issue is being kept “sleeping.”
