About fifty men in a steel tube under the North Atlantic, with only the air they had sailed with. This documentary goes inside the German Type VIIC U-boat as it sailed in 1941, from the bow to the stern, to show how its crew lived down there. The boat's own manual counted the supply: 212 chemical cartridges to pull the carbon dioxide out of the air, bottles holding a fixed store of oxygen, and about a thousand gallons of drinking water for some fifty men over several weeks. We follow the voyage from the concrete bunker at Saint-Nazaire: food for eight weeks squeezed between pipes and valves, smoked hams hanging in the control room, beds beside the torpedoes, the captain's corner, the open bridge in the cold and the spray, a single cook, two tiny washrooms, the diesel room and its smell, and the stern, the last room. Subscribe to Lived Inside for the next machine, and for the people who had to live inside it.
