The USS Hornet (CV-12) is a decommissioned Essex-class aircraft carrier and military museum located in the old Naval Air Station Main Barracks in Alameda, California. The ship was built for the United States Navy during World War II and was assigned to the Fast Carrier Task Force in the Pacific Ocean during the Pacific War. Initially built in 1940 and completed in 1943, the USS Hornet aircraft carrier participated in attacks on Japanese installations in New Guinea, Palau, and Truk. It then took part on missions in the Mariana and Palau Islands, most notably during the Battle of the Philippine Sea, nicknamed the "Great Marianas Turkey Shoot" for its immense firepower against Japanese installations. The ship returned to the United States mainland due to a strong typhoon that badly damaged the ship for repairs in 1945. It was then decommissioned in 1947. The USS Hornet was then reactivated during the Korean War of 1950-1953 but spent its time during a modernization phase.
