South Africans are having fewer children, and the conversation around the declining birth rate is creating very different opinions. While some are concerned about what this could mean for the country in the future, others believe we first need to understand why people are choosing smaller families or deciding not to have children at all. The debate touches on some of the realities people face today: unemployment, the rising cost of living, housing and childcare costs, relationship difficulties, absent parents and uncertainty about the future. There is also concern about the long-term impact. Fewer children today could eventually mean fewer workers, taxpayers, professionals and entrepreneurs supporting an ageing population. On the other hand, some argue that people shouldn't be encouraged to have children simply because the economy will need another generation of workers. The conversation around women adds another dimension. If women are repeatedly told that they should “choose better fathers,” what happens when some look at their circumstances and decide that having no children is the better choice for them? 🇿🇦 What is your view? Is South Africa’s declining birth rate a serious concern, or are people simply making decisions based on the realities they face today? I’d really like to hear different perspectives, so leave your thoughts in the comments.
