Why Do We Keep Loving the Broken Characters?

Why do we look at fictional characters and think, “literally me”? Spike Spiegel, Zuko, Denji, and Guts couldn't be more different on the surface. One is a laid-back bounty hunter, one is a prince searching for his place in the world, one is a teenager desperately chasing a normal life, and one is a warrior fighting through unimaginable hardship. Yet somehow, people see themselves in them.
