MONTANA 1996 Cold Case Solved — The Killer Died Just Hours After Police Confronted Him In September 1996, 15-year-old Danielle “Danni” Houchins left her home in Belgrade, Montana, for a peaceful afternoon near the Gallatin River. She never returned. Hours later, her body was discovered face-down in shallow water near Cameron Bridge Fishing Access. Despite disturbing evidence surrounding her death, authorities initially considered the possibility of an accidental drowning, leaving her devastated family searching for answers. For nearly 28 years, Danielle's case remained unsolved. Her younger sister, Stephanie Mollet, refused to give up, continually pushing investigators to reopen the investigation. In 2023, advances in forensic DNA technology finally provided a breakthrough. DNA recovered from a tiny rootless hair preserved since 1996 led investigators to Paul Nathaniel Hutchinson, a respected Montana fisheries biologist who had lived an ordinary life for decades without becoming a suspect. On July 23, 2024, detectives confronted Hutchinson about Danielle's murder. Less than ten hours later, he died by suicide along a deserted Montana road.
