Biologists Buried Boxes & Tons of Rocks in Dead Creeks — Then 2,500 Trout Appeared/Mile

Welcome to Future Forge! In 1978, a Wisconsin creek called Coon Creek was so ruined that not a single wild trout was being born in it. The only trout in it came off hatchery trucks, and the biologist watching over it had a name for them. Pigs with fins. The water barely covered your boots. And the fix that biologist Dave Vetrano started building sounded like a joke. Bury wooden boxes under the bank and surround them with tons of rock. For it to work, farmers had to let excavators onto their land. One of the men who said yes carried a reputation as the man polluting the creek. Years later, creeks in the region that once held two or three hundred trout a mile reached, in the best cases, 2,500. The strange part was that the solution wasn't simply putting more fish in the creek.
