China Ranch Date Farm in Tecopa, California has a rich history that includes mining, agriculture, and the spirit of its founders:
1800s: A Chinese man named Ah Foo settled in the canyon, built an irrigation system, and raised livestock, fruits, vegetables, and hay to support the local silver miners. The area became known as the "China Man's Ranch".
1920s: Vonola Modine, the daughter of a Death Valley pioneer, planted the first date palms from seed.
1970: Charles Brown Jr. and Bernice Sorrells purchased the ranch.
1990: The current owners began planting young date palms and opened the ranch to the public in 1996.
Today: The ranch is operated by Brian and Travis Brown, a father and son team.
China Ranch Date Farm is located in a secluded canyon in the Mojave Desert. The area was once a freshwater lake that dried up and became a playa, or dry lake. The surrounding hillsides are soft and contain mineral salts, which made the area popular for mining exploration in the 1800s
