Why are we the only human species left? Every person you have ever met is Homo sapiens. But between 100,000 and 60,000 years ago, on the Indonesian island of Flores, a fully grown hunter stood about three and a half feet tall, and that hunter was human too, just not your kind.
In this video, you follow the other humans one by one: Homo erectus, who lasted about 1.9 million years; Homo naledi, still alive when our species was appearing in Africa; the "hobbits" of Flores, who hunted small elephants beside Komodo dragons; and the Luzon people, who somehow crossed open sea. You'll meet Johann Carl Fuhlrott, the schoolteacher who stood up for the first Neanderthal bones while experts called them a sick Russian soldier, and Denny, a 13-year-old girl with a Neanderthal mother and a Denisovan father. You'll see a skull hidden in a well for decades that may finally show the Denisovans' face, and find out how pieces of these lost humans still live in people today. And you'll weigh the five leading explanations for the question nobody has proven: why was it us?
So do you think we won because we were smarter, more connected, more numerous, or just lucky? Tell me in the comments, hit like, and subscribe to Era Echo, because more videos looking at everyday things from a real-life point of view are on the way. Stick with me for the next one.
