You may think you've communicated your vision clearly. But does your team actually understand what you want?
In this episode of Speaking With One Voice, Coach Rodney Payne continues his Transformational Leadership series with a surprising reality: fewer than half of employees strongly agree that they know what's expected of them at work.
Leaders send emails, hold meetings, create presentations, and repeat their vision. But just because information was delivered doesn't mean it was understood.
Rodney challenges leaders to stop measuring communication by what they say and start measuring it by what their people actually hear, understand, and do.
Using the story of Paul O'Neill's leadership at Alcoa, Rodney explains how consistently communicating one clear priority can transform an entire organization. By making workplace safety the central focus, O'Neill created clarity that influenced employee behavior, operational performance, and ultimately the company's success.
In this episode:
Why fewer than half of employees clearly understand expectations
The difference between sending information and communicating effectively
How leadership messages get distorted as they move through organizations
Why transformational leadership requires clarity of vision
What Paul O'Neill's leadership at Alcoa teaches us about consistency
The power of communicating one sentence, one number, and one behavior
Why leaders must repeat their vision until everyone can communicate it
How regular feedback improves employee engagement
Why communication must be supported by training and accountability
How to determine whether your team understands organizational change
Why leaders must take responsibility when their message isn't understood
Rodney also introduces a practical three-question test every leader can use to measure communication effectiveness:
1. What are we changing?
2. What is your role in it?
3. How will we know if it worked?
Ask five randomly selected employees these questions individually. Don't explain the answers, correct their responses, or provide additional context.
Just listen.
Their answers will reveal whether your organization's vision is actually reaching the people responsible for carrying it out.
For this week's Coach's Challenge, Rodney encourages leaders to take those responses and make them the agenda for their next leadership meeting.
Because gathering feedback is only the beginning. Transformational leadership requires acting on what you learn.
If your team doesn't know what you want, you'll never get what you want.
