Biologists Finally Know What's Killing Water Buffalo in Australia — And It Shouldn't Be Possible. A grown swamp buffalo can weigh 1,200 kilos, and for almost two hundred years nothing in Australia could bring one down except people. Today up to 300,000 wild buffalo roam the floodplains of Arnhem Land and Kakadu, and the herd could double by 2030.
Helicopter culls, disease campaigns and meat mustering have all failed to hold them back. But something on the floodplains is killing them anyway, and biologists found it by reading the chemistry locked inside the bones of the killer. Fifty years ago, this predator was almost gone from the Northern Territory.
In this wildlife documentary, we follow the buffalo from a string of failed British forts in the 1800s to the biggest cull in the history of the north, uncover what scientists discovered in Kakadu's rivers, and why the answer is not the happy ending it sounds like.
