No One Believed These Yakima Canutt Stories! Until They Watched This!
Yakima Canutt was the cowboy Hollywood erased — and then could not live without. He invented the modern stunt profession, taught John Wayne how to throw a punch, and staged the most famous action scene in movie history.
Born Enos Edward Canutt on a ranch near Colfax, Washington in 1895, he broke his first wild bronco at age 11 and became a five-time world champion rodeo cowboy before Hollywood ever knew his name. He starred in 48 silent westerns as a handsome leading man — until the arrival of sound film exposed a voice scarred by the 1918 Spanish flu and ended his acting career overnight. Instead of going home, he reinvented himself as the greatest stuntman who ever lived. He doubled John Wayne and Clark Gable, drove a buggy through the burning of Atlanta in Gone with the Wind, and performed the legendary stagecoach fall that director John Ford refused to ever shoot again. He invented the screen fist fight, designed safety devices that saved countless lives, and staged the thunderous Ben-Hur chariot race that helped the film win 11 Oscars. In 1967, he became the first stuntman in history to receive an Academy Award.
A champion rodeo rider, a silent film star, a Hollywood legend who spent 50 years making other men look brave — and one of the most important figures in movie history that most people have never heard of.
