Sharbat-e-Wasl Ka Ek Ghoont Pila Hi Na Sake शरबत-ए-वस्ल का एक घूँट पिला ही न सके Dost Mohamed | 1929–30 | HMV P 10240 | 78 RPM An exceptionally old Hindustani song from the gramophone era, recorded by Dost Mohamed for His Master's Voice (HMV), Calcutta, around 1929–30. This recording brings us the voice of Dost Mohamed, a singer whose work can also be traced to Hindi films of the 1940s under the name Dost Mohammad. Record details • Singer: Dost Mohamed • Record label: His Master's Voice (HMV) • Record number: P 10240 • Language: Hindustani • Side A: Kya Uthayenge Tere Dar Se Uthaane Wale • Matrix number: 28-12271    • Dost Mohamed - Kya uthayenge tere dar se |...   • Side B: Sharbat-e-Wasl Ka Ek Ghoont Pila Hi Na Sake • Matrix number: 28-12272 • Year of issue: 1929–30 The dating of this record to 1929–30 is based on the research of noted gramophone-record researcher and music archivist Shri Giridharilal Vishwakarma ji. Dost Mohamed and his later film career: Dost Mohamed is perhaps the same singer credited as Dost Mohammad or Dost Mohd. in Hindi films of the 1940s. A comparison of the voices in this early gramophone recording and his later film songs suggests that they belong to the same singer. His known film-song credits include: • Dhanwan (1946) • Ghar Ki Bahu (1947) • Andhon Ka Sahara (1948) • Sati Vijaya (1948) If this identification is correct, this HMV recording documents his singing nearly two decades before these known film appearances. About this archival transfer: This is a transfer from an original shellac record, not a modern studio restoration. The recording retains the characteristic sound of a nearly century-old disc, including surface noise, clicks, crackle, occasional groove wear and other imperfections. The intention is to preserve the historical character of the original recording rather than make it sound like a modern studio production. About Dhoosar Smriti (धूसर स्मृति): Dhoosar Smriti means “Faded Memories.” This channel is dedicated to preserving and sharing rare and forgotten recordings from India's musical past, particularly songs surviving on fragile shellac records. Many of these recordings belong to an era that predates modern recording technology, and some are exceptionally difficult to find in the digital domain. Where original physical records are available in my collection, I endeavour to digitise them carefully and make their music accessible to listeners, researchers and lovers of vintage Indian music. The purpose is not merely to reproduce an old recording, but to bring a fragment of a vanished musical world back into the realm of listening.
