Are These Sharks DANGEROUS? Swimming With Leopard Sharks!

Would YOU go swimming with wild sharks?! During my visit to Birch Aquarium in San Diego, California, I got to experience something incredible! I met two shark scientists, Jack and Zack, who are PhD students at UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography, studying sharks found along the Southern California coast. We talked about their research, the different shark species that call San Diego home, and why understanding these amazing predators is so important for ocean conservation. Of course, I had plenty of questions about what it's REALLY like to study sharks for a living! But the adventure didn't stop there! I also joined the Birch Aquarium team for an unforgettable snorkeling experience with wild leopard sharks and learned about their special public program that introduces visitors to the incredible marine life found just off the San Diego coastline, including leopard sharks and stingrays! Getting into the water and experiencing these animals in their natural habitat was an amazing reminder of why education and conservation are so important. Sharks are often misunderstood, and experiences like these can help people replace fear with curiosity and appreciation.
