Ordinary grief has a grave to stand at. This grief has nothing to hold—because what was lost was never entirely real, and what was real was never entirely safe.
When a loved one dies, society offers rituals, sympathy, and space to unravel. But walking away from a narcissistic relationship leaves you with a grief that has no blueprint. There is no funeral, no flowers, and often no acknowledgment from the outside world. Instead, you are left navigating the disorienting reality of mourning someone who is still physically alive, yet whose tenderest version was a constructed illusion.
In this mini-workshop from our Recovery Series, we give this unique pain its full, honest name. We unpack the layered reality of narcissistic abuse grief:
The Illusion vs. Reality: Untangling the impossible space between the person who made you feel seen and the person who caused you deep harm.
The Four Layers of Loss: Honoring the grief for the person you believed in, the shared future that vanished, the relationship you thought you had, and the parts of yourself you lost along the way.
Trauma Bonding & Withdrawal: Understanding why your body grieves like it is in physical withdrawal due to cycles of intermittent reinforcement.
Disenfranchised Mourning: Giving yourself the permission to grieve that the outside world often denies.
Your grief is real, your pain makes sense, and it deserves to be witnessed.
