I thought I was good at Street Fighter. Turns out the fighters had a few things to say about that, and now Cammy is telling her friends at Delta Red all about it. In this video, we use those insults to break down reported speech: what changes when you report what someone said, and what doesn't. We look at reporting verbs, pronoun shifts, and moving verbs one step back into the past, plus the trickier cases like questions, imperatives, and beliefs that are still true. What you'll learn: The difference between "say" and "tell" and why "tell" needs an object pronoun How pronouns change when the viewpoint changes Why verbs go one step back into the past When you don't change the verb at all (beliefs and things still true) Reporting questions with "ask" plus "if" or the more formal "whether" Turning imperatives into infinitives with "to" Verb change table: Present simple → Past simple Present continuous → Past continuous Present perfect → Past perfect Present perfect continuous → Past perfect continuous Past simple → Past perfect Past continuous → Past perfect continuous Past perfect → Past perfect (no change) Past perfect continuous → Past perfect continuous (no change) will → would can → could Want a worksheet that gives this table with examples, as well as questions to practise your knowledge?
