How to Raise Righteous Muslim Children in the West | Hisham Abu Yusuf
.
Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates – the founders of Facebook and Microsoft – do not allow their children to use smartphones until the age of 16. The men who built these technologies know their danger better than anyone. If they restrict screens, so should you.
In this comprehensive and urgently practical lecture, Ustadh Hisham Abu Yusuf lays out a complete parenting framework based on the three age stages of Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA): play with them until 7, teach them until 14, and befriend them until 21. He addresses the unique challenges of raising children in the 21st century – from screens and pornography exposure (1 in 3 children see it by age 8) to peer pressure, madrasa reform, and the crisis of parents blocking marriages over ethnicity.
In this video, you will learn:
The Three Age Stages of Parenting (Ali ibn Abi Talib RA):
0-7: Play with them. The most important thing to teach is who Allah is – not scaring them with boogeymen, ghouls, or "Baba will get you." Connect them to Allah through nature, toys, and gratitude.
7-14: Teach them. Discipline begins now, but gently. The Prophet ﷺ said to start teaching Salah at 7 and discipline at 10. This is also the age for role models outside the home (masjid, Muslim football coaches, martial arts).
14-21: Befriend them. They are now adults. They will have doubts, hormones, and confusion. If you built the bond early, they will come to you. Don't wallop them – dialogue with them like the Prophet ﷺ did with the young man who wanted to commit Zina.
The Screen Crisis:
No smartphones before 16 (follow the tech giants themselves).
No screens before age 7 if possible (Ustadh sold his TV).
If you use screens, control content and time – use cartoons of the prophets, Salahuddin, Tariq bin Ziyad.
The Pornography & Drugs Reality:
1 in 3 children in the UK see pornography by age 8.
1 in 6 in London will smoke or do drugs by age 13.
Parents must be proactive, not reactive.
Madrasa Reform:
Most madrasas push children away with boring, rigid teaching.
Include play, stories, nasheeds, movement. Children sit from 9-3 at school; they cannot sit again from 4-6.
Parents: invest in madrasa like you invest in math tuition (£30/hour for math, but a £3/month madrasa hike causes riots).
The Average Parent Spends 20 Minutes Per Day with Their Child: The taxi driver father who gave up evening shifts to spend 6 hours with his sons raised Quran memorizers. Time is the secret – not money.
The Ethnicity Barrier & Early Marriage:
The Prophet ﷺ said: "If someone with good deen and manners comes to you, marry them (to your children)." Not ethnicity, cuisine, or passport.
Parents who block marriage over ethnicity cause young Muslims to commit Zina. The Prophet ﷺ warned: if you refuse, there will be fitna and great corruption on earth.
Encourage early marriage (18-22). Make halal easy.
This lecture is essential for every parent, grandparent, imam, and community leader. Your children are under attack. Arm them with Allah-consciousness, time, and a supportive community.
