Since Partition, minorities in East Pakistan and Bangladesh have faced sustained persecution, and the pattern continues today. In this episode, Bappaditya Basu, Organising Secretary of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council (BHBCUC) and a former key organiser of the 2013 Shahbag movement, speaks to Pratim Ranjan Bose about the scale and mechanics of this crisis from exile in India. Basu states that Hindus in Bangladesh remain vulnerable to rape, murder, and systematic land grabbing, with temple and even crematorium land among the targets. He alleges that Bangladesh's political parties and its army are aligned in this persecution, and describes how Hindu communities are reportedly pressured to expand Durga Puja celebrations each year to project a false image of secularism and communal harmony to the outside world. According to Basu's estimate, roughly 500,000 members of minority communities have left Bangladesh over the last two years, with most crossing into India, and he says the pace of this exodus has accelerated in recent months.
