I have a habit of trying to optimize almost everything in my life — my health, workouts, routines, finances, career, productivity, even how I spend my free time.
And while making my last video about how much South Florida has changed, I realized something slightly hypocritical: one of my biggest complaints was that we’ve optimized so much of the character out of the place I grew up.
So when does optimization stop making something better? When does self-improvement start reaching diminishing returns?
From MLB analytics to the way we build our cities to the way we build our lives, maybe the technically “optimal” version of something isn’t always the best version of it.
I’m probably never going to stop trying to improve things. I just don’t want to optimize all the spontaneity, weirdness and character out of my own life in the process.
