Composed around 1904, it remains one of his best-known works. Vittorio Monti was born in Naples, Italy, on January 6, 1868, and died in Naples on June 20, 1922. In addition to being a composer, he was a violinist, mandolinist, and conductor. The csárdás is a traditional Hungarian dance. Its name is associated with the Hungarian word csárda, meaning a roadside inn or tavern where people gathered to eat, drink, and dance. Monti’s Csárdás is famous for its contrasting moods and tempos. It begins with a slow, expressive, and melancholic melody before developing into increasingly fast, energetic, and virtuosic passages. The music combines deep emotion, dramatic intensity, and dazzling technical brilliance.
