About Cliffe Castle: Originally built as Cliffe Hall between 1828 and 1833, the property was transformed in the late 1870s by textile millionaire Henry Isaac Butterfield into a lavish neo-Gothic mansion (renamed Cliffe Castle) with towers, a ballroom, conservatories, and extravagant interiors. The family’s griffin heraldic symbol can still be seen today. In the 1950s, local benefactor Sir Bracewell Smith purchased the estate and generously donated it, converting the house and grounds into a free public museum and park for the people of Keighley. It has remained free ever since and holds a Green Flag Award for its beautiful Victorian-style gardens, terraces, lawns, water features, and woodland paths. The museum inside features restored Victorian rooms, local history, natural history galleries (including birds and animals), archaeology, minerals, stunning stained glass, and much more.
