You are seven years old, sump-fishing the flooded under-levels of a hive, and your fear makes the water stand up in a small blind wall. Your mother does not scream. She presses your thumb into warm lead over the stove and ties it at your throat and tells you to keep your want quiet. She is buying you a few years she cannot afford.
This is the whole life of a sanctioned psyker of the Astra Militarum, from a sump-child on the hive world of Vardun to a scorched survivor old for what he is. He is tithed to a Black Ship, warded at the Scholastia Psykana, and handed back to his own world's regiment as a living weapon. He does not carry messages. He is pointed at the enemy and told to burn, and the man one pace behind him carries a tin of small lead discs, one match for every psyker in his charge, and the round meant for the back of his skull the instant something looks out through his eyes. He learns he is good at the one thing that will kill him. He loses the one friend who kept him human. He is spent, and warded tighter, and spent again, and at the end he watches the collectors cut a warm lead disc off a new child's neck and tells the child the same doomed thing his mother told him. The door in his mind is always there. The bolt still holds. He is still standing when the next war is called.
This is an unofficial fan-made fictional composite created for entertainment and lore exploration. It does not depict any canonical psyker. The hive world Vardun, Hive Sarn, the Vardun 114th, and all named characters are fictional. Warhammer 40,000 and all associated names are property of Games Workshop; this is unofficial fan content. Narration and illustrations in this video are AI-generated.
If a man is kept alive only so long as he is useful and dangerous in the same breath, watched by someone he trusts to end him, is the ward that protects him a mercy, or only the reason he is still here to be spent one more time?
