Fertilizer Crisis: Solutions for Africa

Africa's food systems remain vulnerable to global fertilizer market shocks, rising input costs and dependence on imported fertilizers. Building greater resilience requires solutions that strengthen long-term soil fertility while supporting agricultural productivity. This high-level dialogue brings together leaders from government, research, finance, industry and development to examine practical pathways towards more resilient and sustainable nutrient management across Africa. The discussion explores how integrated soil fertility management, innovative nutrient sources and stronger investment can help African countries reduce their exposure to external fertilizer shocks while improving soil health and farmer productivity. The session explores: • Integrated soil fertility management approaches that improve soil health and productivity • Innovative nutrient sources, including green nitrogen and biofertilizers • Policy reforms that can strengthen Africa's fertilizer and soil health systems • Investment opportunities for scaling sustainable nutrient solutions • Approaches to reducing dependence on imported fertilizers • Partnerships between governments, research institutions, industry, investors and development organisations The session contributes to the implementation of the CAADP Kampala Strategy (2026-2035) and the African Union Fertilizer and Soil Health Action Plan by connecting science, policy and investment around sustainable nutrient management.
